Netherlands lends hand to Viet Nam cocoa growers
The Netherlands has pledged to provide Viet Nam with financial and technical support to help the Viet Nam cocoa industry ensure its sustainable development.
Pursuant to a memorandum of understanding inked between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the Netherlands’ Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Viet Nam must designate an area to supply raw material for the industry and quickly build up the necessary labour force.
The deal was signed at a two-day seminar that ended late last week in HCM City.
As a result of the agreement, Viet Nam aims to emerge as a reliable global supplier of cocoa beans, particularly in Asia where supply falls far below demand, MARD affirmed during the seminar.

Coffee exports percolate past $2 billion mark
The export turnover of Vietnamese coffee during the 2007-2008 period exceeded US$2 billion, said Luong Van Tu, chairman of the Viet Nam Coffee Association (VCA), at a meeting held last Friday.
Tu also outlined concerns the coffee industry should heed for the 2008-2009 period.
There are currently 520,000 ha of coffee plantations in the country. Viet Nam exports coffee to 75 countries and territories, including Germany, the US, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Japan, Korea, France and the UK.
However, instant coffee, roasted coffee grounds and 3 in 1 coffee mixes from Viet Nam are mainly sold domestically and a few international markets, including Canada, Germany, the US, Australia and Korea.

Not concentrate and focus too much on tourism investment
That is the comment of experts on the status all people making tourism happening in most provinces in the country.  Although the program of National Action on tourism for the period of 2006 - 2010 has been approved by the Government, identified tourism as a key economic industry, but the investment is too spread and lack of consistent management of the agency that will make tourism development unstable in environment and culture. Not including, if all local authorities consider tourism as key economic industries, unintentionally we overlook the development of other strong economic sectors.
“Headache” for exporting coffee
Viet Nam coffee and cocoa Association (Vicofa) recently held a meeting to summarize the coffee production - export for the crop year of 2007 - 2008.  According to Vicofa, this is the 3rd consecutive crop year the coffee sector of Viet Nam reached export turnover of over 1 billion USD and this is the first crop with export turn of over 2 billion USD.  This is considered to be a victory of the coffee industry, but interest rates is rising, prices of coffee are significantly reduced making the exporters “headache”.

 According to Vicofa, production crop of 2007-2008, as well as the general situation of other countries of exporting coffee in the world, production of coffee Viet Nam is not high.  However, the country exported over one million tons of raw coffee with prices of 1,937USD / ton, turnover reached 2 billion USD.

Financial crisis cuts into tourism targets
Even though the peak tourism season is in full swing, the number of foreign tourists to Viet Nam has not increased, according to statistics by the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).
Tourists visit Bat Trang pottery village in Gia Lam District, Ha Noi. The country will likely miss its target for tourism this year.
Statistics show that the number of foreign tourists coming to Viet Nam from June to August decreased 15 per cent from the same period last year.
The trend continued in September, with only 315,000 overseas visitors in the country, 50,000 less than September 2007.
Most of the foreign tourists to Viet Nam in September came from China, Russia and Germany.
According to reports from several five-star hotels in HCM City and Ha Noi, not as many foreigners spent part of their summer holidays (from June to September) in Viet Nam as last year.

Prices of many agricultural products have fallen down without a pause, in which 2 strategy products as coffee and rubber are concerned by where hundreds of businesses and millions of people in the Central Highlands.
Coffee: Try to be even
 The Site daktra.com.vn of the Dak Lak Trade and Investment promotion Center on 29/10 update purchase price of raw coffee in the province fell to 23 million VND per ton.  Compared to peak price of 40-41 millions VND per ton in the last week of the end of February and beginning of March of this year, coffee prices have fallen more than 43%. Depending on the way of management and intensive farming techniques and climate characteristics of each area, the price of raw Robusta coffee has the difference of 6-7 millions VND per ton.
 Mr. Tran Minh Thuy, Director of Phuoc An Coffee Company said that the price of export coffee of this company is not less than 25 million VND per ton, so the company is going to be in debt to workers.

Vietnam drops plan to organize tourism year 2009
The annua tourism year will not take place in 2009 following a decision from the Government, citing the lack of tourism facilities and the running-out time required for preparation following the refusal of Daklak Province to serve as host for the program. Under the new decision issued by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, the year-long tourism program has been canceled, said Nguyen Manh Cuong, deputy head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism.

Local tourism learns to attract Russians
About 100 participants from local travel companies, hotels, resorts and tourism agencies joined a seminar in HCMC last Friday to learn about ways to develop the Russian market, an emerging market for the local inbound tourism sector.
Speaker Sorokin Andrey, manager of the China and Vietnam market department of Capital Tour, one of the three Russian travel companies regularly sending travelers to Vietnam, said Russia’s outbound market was emerging with over 30 million people traveling to foreign countries a year.

Vietnam’s retail market attracts foreign investors
Vietnam’s retail market is considered one of the most attractive business fields for foreign investors.
Ralf Mattheas, Managing Director of Taylor Nielsen Sofres (TNS), a market survey company, said that he does not know of any other country in the world, except Vietnam, which has the GDP per capita increasing by two fold within just six years. Therefore, Vietnam appears deserving to be one of the most attractive retail markets in the world.
According to TNS Vietnam, more than 60% of Vietnamese consumers believe that their living standards will better off in the next 12 months.

Coffee exporters eye Chinese market
Vice president Doan Trieu Nhan of the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association (VICOFA) said that Vietnamese businesses have introduced instant coffee trademarked “VINACAFE” and “Trung Nguyen” in China , home to 1.3 billion people.*
According to the exporters, Chinese people, especially the youth in big cities, choose coffee for their drink. They appreciate Vietnam-made coffee for various reasons, including its competitive price.
In Beijing , one sachet of instant coffee made in Vietnam is wholesaled at between 2,000-3,000 VND in equivalence while a cup of coffee cost about 120,000 VND, they revealed.
